

Carl Hoefer is an ICREA Research Professor at the University of Barcelona, specializing in the philosophy of science and metaphysics. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Stanford University and has held academic positions at institutions such as the University of California, Riverside, and the London School of Economics. Hoefer's research focuses on the nature of space, time, and motion as revealed by physics, particularly Einstein's theories of relativity, as well as the nature of objective probability. He has served as the founding Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science and is currently the Director of the Barcelona Institute of Analytic Philosophy (BIAP). In 2024, Hoefer was awarded the prestigious Lakatos Award for his book "Chance in the World: A Humean Guide to Objective Chance," which offers a comprehensive analysis of objective probability from a Humean perspective.
